“Oscar Wilde said that if you know what you want to be, then you inevitably become it - that is your punishment, but if you never know, then you can be anything. There is a truth to that. We are not nouns, we are verbs. I am not a thing - an actor, a writer - I am a person who does things - I write, I act - and I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.”

Timba Smits’s “Role Models” at Lamington Drive.
Opening on Wednesday, May 18th at Lamington Drive Gallery in Collingwood, Australia is the long awaited solo show from acclaimed illustrator Timba Smits entitled “Role Models.”
15 years since his first and only solo show (Due in part to being stabbed on a London bus defending passengers in 2011) Timba Smits has returned with “Role Models,” a show of pop culture portraits that take a look at what it means for actors to take on fictional identities and explore how these unreal people help shape our lives. Timba explained the show to me as this: “in a nutshell the exhibition explores my fascination with movies, characters in films and the actors that portray them but underneath it’s also about identity. A question I’ve always pondered has been if it wasn’t for growing up with these characters in my life, as cultural guides, would I be who I am? Would anyone? I mean take cinema and its wonderful array of characters and ceaseless imagination away and what effect would that have on our own self identity? Would we be less funny, less romantic, less bold, less scared if it wasn’t for these role models and their powerful way of delivering clear messages, punchy one liners, catch phrases and sentimental monologues?”
“Role Models” will be on display until the 11th of June, 2016. Definitely check this show out if you’re in the area. I wish I could go!
